About The Crown Index

The Crown Index is a collector's field guide to Rolex references. Most watch-market sites are spreadsheets wearing websites: dense charts built for people who already know what a 16610 is. We built the opposite: look up any reference and get its story, its factory configurations, its original retail versus today's market, and a plain-English investment grade you can actually act on.

How the grades work

Every reference gets a score out of 100 and a letter grade (S through D) built from five meters: momentum (price direction over the last year), liquidity (how fast it sells and how tight the dealer spread is), scarcity (production status and supply), value entry (where today's price sits against its own history), and condition safety (age, parts risk, and how easy it is to buy a bad example). The meters are editorial judgments on defined rubrics, informed by dealer sales data and market history. They are opinions, held honestly and updated regularly.

Where the numbers come from

Original retail prices come from documented price-list history. Current market ranges are compiled from live dealer listings and published dealer transaction data, stamped with the date of our last refresh. Historical curves are reconstructed from documented market points and the well-known arc of the watch market. Every watch page links directly to eBay's sold listings so you can audit any number we publish against what buyers actually paid. As our data sources deepen, estimates get replaced with recorded sales.

What we are not

Not financial advisors, not appraisers, and not affiliated with Rolex S.A. Watches are a store of value at best and a passion at heart. Buy what you love, verify everything, and treat any appreciation as the bonus, not the plan.
