The most famous handbag in the world began with a conversation on a 1983 flight between Hermès chief Jean-Louis Dumas and actress Jane Birkin, who wanted a bag big enough for everything she carried. He sketched it on an airsickness bag.
Hermès does not simply sell Birkins. Boutiques offer them to clients with a purchase history, which keeps supply far below demand and is the single reason resale prices sit above retail.
Each bag is made by one artisan from start to finish, signed with their stamp inside the strap, and takes many hours of hand stitching.
Smaller sizes are the story of the last decade: the 25 trades at roughly double boutique price, while the larger 35 now sits much closer to retail as tastes moved to compact bags.
Our verdict: The benchmark of luxury resale. The 25 is the trophy, the 30 the sweet spot, and the 35 the value play.
