The Kelly existed decades before the Birkin, introduced in the 1930s as a saddle-maker's bag, and it took its name after Grace Kelly was photographed using one to shield her pregnancy from cameras in 1956.
'Sellier' means saddler: the stitching runs on the outside and the corners are sharp and structured. It is the more formal, harder-to-make version, and collectors pay more for it.
Like the Birkin, it is offered through boutique allocation rather than sold freely, which keeps resale above retail.
The 25 has become the most wanted size, matching the shift toward smaller bags.
Our verdict: The connoisseur's choice. Sellier holds a premium over Retourne, and the 25 is the size to own.
