'Padellone' means 'big frying pan' in Italian, the affectionate nickname Italian collectors gave this oversized triple calendar moonphase.
At 38mm it was enormous for its era, and it is one of only two moonphase references Rolex made in the 20th century, alongside the 6062.
Unlike the 6062, it does not use an Oyster case, which is why it is the slightly more accessible of the two grails.
Like all vintage complicated Rolex, original dials and provenance decide the price.
Our verdict: A: the bigger, rarer sibling of the Stelline. A true collector's grail.
