3,900 meters of water resistance and a 17.7mm-thick case. The D-Blue 'James Cameron' gradient dial is the one with a following.
Size limits the buyer pool, which keeps it near retail.
The Deepsea is rated to 3,900 meters, which is not marketing: Rolex builds a titanium-and-steel 'Ringlock' pressure system into each one and crush-tests them in a tank COMEX helped design. No human has ever needed one. That's not the point.
The D-Blue gradient dial commemorates James Cameron's 2012 solo dive to the Challenger Deep, nearly 11km down, with an experimental Rolex strapped to the sub's arm that worked perfectly. The dial fades from ocean blue to the black of the deep, which is exactly what he saw.
Our verdict: An engineering flex, not an investment. The D-Blue holds value best of the line.
