The story

The first automatic Daytona, powered by a reworked Zenith El Primero. Only twelve years of production and endless micro-variations keep scholars busy.

'Patrizzi' dials, whose subdial rings browned with age, trade at serious premiums. Original 1990s retail was under $4,000.

The Daytona that saved the Daytona: in 1988 Rolex stuffed a modified Zenith El Primero into the case, finally making the chronograph self-winding, and demand flipped from 'discounted at ADs' to 'waitlist' almost overnight.

Collectors dissect it by dial marks (Mk I through VI) and hunt the 'Patrizzi' dials whose subdial rings browned from a varnish mistake, a defect worth a premium now. The last Daytona with an outside movement, and the first modern hype watch.

Our verdict: The collector's modern Daytona. An 8x return for original owners and still climbing on scarcity.
