Twenty-six years of one quiet black dial. The purist's vintage Rolex, and early gilt examples are museum pieces.
Its very simplicity makes originality checks easier than on a vintage Sub, but service dials still lurk everywhere.
Produced for 26 years almost unchanged, the 1016 is the collector's definition of 'if it ain't broke'. Matte dial, painted 3-6-9, zero pretension; it's the watch people graduate to after owning everything louder.
Ian Fleming, who invented James Bond, wore a 1016 himself, arguably making it the real Bond watch. Gilt-dial early examples have crossed into serious money, but even standard matte-dial examples outrun inflation nicely.
Our verdict: The connoisseur's pick. Less flash than a 5513, same appreciation engine.
