The first sapphire-crystal Explorer, 36mm and dead simple. 'Blackout' dials from 1991, with black-filled numerals, trade for multiples.
Neo-vintage Explorers ride every small-watch rally.
The Explorer that fixed the Explorer: in 1989 the 3-6-9 numerals went from painted to applied white gold, the crystal went sapphire, and the case got modern guards, while keeping the sacred 36mm size.
Japanese collectors turned this into a cult object in the 90s ('the Ichiro watch' after a TV drama made it famous there), and the 'blackout' early examples with black-filled numerals now trade for multiples of the standard ones.
Our verdict: Honest and liquid. The Blackout is the lottery ticket; the standard dial is the steady hold.
