The story

The Everest watch, back at its classic 36mm. Modest premium, modest swings, maximum wearability.

One of the few steel sports models you can occasionally still get at an AD, which caps the secondary premium.

The Explorer is the mountaineering watch: Rolex equipped the 1953 Everest expedition, and the 3-6-9 dial became the company's most austere and most loved design. This 36mm revival returned after fans spent a decade complaining the 39 was too big.

Nothing about it shouts. That's the point: it's the Rolex for people who read the history books, and the 36mm case is the same size Hillary-era climbers wore.

Our verdict: Hold-your-value pick, not a profit engine. Buy it to wear it.
