The last no-date Sub with an aluminum bezel and drilled lugs (early examples). Collectors call it the final 'tool watch' Submariner.
Two-line non-chronometer dials are the configuration purists want.
The last Submariner that looked like the old ones: aluminum bezel, no date, drilled lugs until 2003, and a dial with just two lines of text. When the 'M' added a chronometer certificate in 2007 the text grew to four lines, and purists mourn the two-liners accordingly.
This is the Sub that closed out an era in 2012; everything after has ceramic and broad shoulders. The neo-vintage crowd treats it as the last honest tool Sub, and its price has been quietly grinding up for a decade.
Our verdict: Underpriced classic. The cheapest way into a discontinued aluminum-bezel Sub.
