“President XL”
Grade D · 52/100Today's call: Buy it to wear, not to flip
D: passion purchase. Ranked #122 of 129 references in The Crown Index vault.

Rolex supersized the President to 41mm for the big-watch 2000s, then thought better of it and replaced it with the better-proportioned Day-Date 40 in 2015.
It trades below retail because the 40 exists. The flip side: this is the cheapest way into a modern solid gold President with a fluted bezel.
The Day-Date II was built for the big-watch 2000s: a 41mm President for wrists and egos that found 36mm insufficient. Rolex corrected course in 2015 with the better-proportioned 40, orphaning this seven-year run.
Orphaned generations in solid gold are the pre-owned market's best-kept bargain bin: full President presence, thousands under both retail and the current model. Shaquille O'Neal energy, CFO pricing.
Our verdict: D as an investment, B as a value play on gold-per-dollar. Buy it to wear a President, not to outperform.
