The first GMT-Master ever made, built for Pan Am pilots in 1954, with no crown guards and a translucent bakelite Pepsi bezel that glowed, and cracked. Rolex recalled the radioactive originals, which is why survivors with honest bakelite are unicorns.
This is the genesis watch of the most collected sports Rolex line. Pussy Galore wore one in Goldfinger; collectors have chased it ever since.
No crown guards, 38mm, and a bakelite bezel that Rolex recalled because the radium numerals made Geiger counters sing. Surviving original-bezel examples are the vintage GMT endgame.
Pussy Galore wore one in Goldfinger (1964), making it one of the first product placements in Bond history that Rolex didn't pay for. Pan Am crews got theirs with the airline's blessing; the jet age wears this watch.
Our verdict: A: a genesis-reference grail. The bezel tells the story and sets the price: original bakelite is a six-figure conversation, service aluminum is the accessible way in.
