Everyone says a Birkin holds its value. The sales data says that is only true for one size. We tracked every recorded eBay sale of the four standard leather Birkin sizes over the last 12 months and lined them up against what each costs at the boutique.
| Size | US retail | Typical sale | vs retail | Sales, 12 mo | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Birkin 25 | $13,500 | $21,000 | +56% | 37 | A+ |
| Birkin 30 | $14,900 | $14,000 | −6% | 88 | A− |
| Birkin 35 | $16,300 | $10,449 | −36% | 106 | C+ |
| Birkin 40 | $20,300 | $8,924 | −56% | 17 | F |
Read the table top to bottom and the pattern is hard to miss: every step up in size costs more at the store and sells for less afterwards. The bag that costs the least new, the 25, is the only one that resells for more than its price tag. The bag that costs the most new, the 40, loses more than half.
The Birkin 25 in Togo is $13,500 at the boutique. Its 37 recorded eBay sales in the last 12 months had a median of $21,000, and the middle half sold between $17,000 and $23,800. That is a premium of about $7,500 over retail on the typical sale.
The reason is access. Hermès does not sell the Birkin online and does not sell it to walk-in shoppers; boutiques offer it to clients they choose, and the 25 is the size most of them are asking for. Buyers who are not offered one at the store pay the resale market instead.
The Birkin 30 is $14,900 new. Its median sale was $14,000 across 88 sales, about 6% under retail, with the middle half from roughly $11,300 to $16,800. It is graded A− in our Vault even though it sells slightly under retail, because it has steady demand and a deep market: you can buy and sell one at a known price.
The Birkin 35 was the most sold Birkin size on eBay, with 106 recorded sales. That volume is exactly the problem: plenty of supply. It costs $16,300 new and sold for a median $10,449, about 36% under retail. As a bag to carry it is a strong used buy. As a bag to buy new and resell, it is not.
The Birkin 40 is the most expensive standard size at $20,300 and the weakest on resale: a median of $8,924 across 17 sales. A buyer who pays retail and sells loses about $11,400 on the typical sale. Our Vault grades it F, the only F among the leather Birkins.
The stiffer Sellier version of the 25 ($14,500 retail) sold for a median $25,000, but only 3 sales were recorded in 12 months, too few to call a market. The direction matches the regular 25: small Birkins sell over retail.
If a boutique offers you a Birkin 25, the market says take it. If you want a 35 or 40 to carry, buy it used and let the first owner absorb the drop. Before paying for any Birkin, run the exact price through Crown Check to see where it sits against real sales, and see every size in the Hermès Vault.
Typical sale is the median of recorded eBay sales over the 12 months to October 29, 2026, as buyer-paid prices before eBay seller fees, each listing counted once. Retail is the US boutique price listed in our Hermès Vault. Hermès does not publish production or allocation numbers, so anything about scarcity below is how the market behaves, not a figure from Hermès.
The Birkin 25. Over the last 12 months it sold for a median $21,000 across 37 recorded eBay sales, 56% above its $13,500 US retail. It is the only standard leather Birkin size that resells clearly above retail.
It depends on the size. A Birkin 25 has sold well above retail; a Birkin 30 sells close to retail (about 6% under); the 35 and 40 sell 36% and 56% under. Prices are past sales, not a forecast.
The median recorded eBay sale over the last 12 months was $14,000 across 88 sales, with the middle half between about $11,300 and $16,800. Leather, color, hardware and condition move the price within that range.
Demand moved to smaller bags. The 40 costs $20,300 new but sold for a median $8,924 across 17 recorded sales, which is why our Vault grades it F as an investment.
