The archetypal Rolex. Dial choice moves the money: Wimbledon and green motif dials command real premiums over silver.
Trades near retail for common dials, which makes it a value entry into the fluted-bezel look.
The Wimbledon dial, slate with green-outlined Roman numerals, became the default 'first nice watch' of a whole generation of finance hires, to the point where the nickname is now more famous than the reference number.
The Datejust itself dates to 1945, the first self-winding waterproof chronometer with a date window. Every watch with a date owes it royalties; the fluted bezel and Jubilee bracelet were both invented for it.
Our verdict: Dial-driven. Buy Wimbledon or green palm for resale; buy silver because you love it.
